Cookies and local storage

There are seven things stored in your browser. This is all of them.

The short version

There are no advertising cookies on this site, no cross-site tracking, and no analytics product following you between pages.

What is stored is listed below in full. Nothing is omitted because it is small.

What we store, and why

  • sidebar_state — a cookie remembering whether the panel beside the player is open. First party, about a year, purely cosmetic.
  • lmsy_hint — a cookie holding only your display name, so the page can show your account the instant it loads instead of flashing a signed-out header while the app wakes up. First party, about a month, sent only to our own server; it carries no password and no identifier, and is cleared on sign out.
  • lmsy.session — a random identifier in session storage, so the viewer count does not count one person as several. Per tab, discarded when you close it, joined to nothing.
  • The sign-in link you last used, and a draft of your profile, in local storage — so a magic link opened in a new tab still knows which address asked for it. Cleared on sign out.
  • Your Firebase sign-in session, in the browser's database. This is what keeps you signed in. Clearing it signs you out.
  • Dismissed notices, in local storage, so a banner you closed stays closed.
  • Your light-or-dark theme choice, in local storage, so the site opens the way you left it.

The one third party

Firebase App Check uses Google reCAPTCHA Enterprise to tell a browser from a script. Without it, the paths that write to the database could be driven automatically.

reCAPTCHA sets its own cookies on Google's domains and Google is the controller of what it collects. We receive a yes-or-no answer and nothing else.

This is the only third party that stores anything in your browser, and it is there for security rather than for measurement.

Consent

Everything in the first list is strictly necessary or purely functional, which is why the site does not ask permission for it: a cookie banner that asks about a sidebar toggle trains people to click through banners that matter.

reCAPTCHA is loaded for the same reason a lock is fitted to a door. If you would rather it were not, the service cannot accept writes from your browser.

Turning it off

Every browser can block or clear cookies and site data, usually under privacy settings. Clearing this site's data signs you out and resets the panel; nothing else is lost.

We do not respond to Do Not Track headers, because there is no tracking here to stop.
